Introduction of
Friar Vincenzo Soffia
Chaplain of the Cappellania
Peace and love
With joy and I do not hide a certain trepidation I begin this pastoral service of mine with you and for you, dear Italians residing in Hong Kong.
It is due to the attention and concern of the Italian Church that I am among you today.
In fact, for almost two centuries the Bishops have always sent shepherds among immigrants, from the various Italian regions, present in various parts of the world, to guard and care for the Lord's flock. (Jn.10,11).
My presence here in Hong Kong is absolutely providential, for years I have been involved as vice-postulator of the cause of beatification of Father Gabriele M. Allegra, this service of mine has brought me to Hong Kong several times, and from this presence of mine in the city of " fragrant port” begins the acquaintance of the Italian Catholic community. My interest and desire to serve as a missionary this portion of God's people in Hong Kong has slowly made its way, guided by providence and discernment with my superiors, what was an idea or a desire has now come true .
My initial training began in Jerusalem, subsequently to
Rome. I was a parish priest in three different parishes, a military chaplain in the Financial Police and in the Navy and I also worked as a chaplain at the Catania prison and professor of the Old Testament at San Luca in Catania.
Now I want to put this experience of mine at your service, to do everything according to the will of the Lord.
First of all, I thank our Cardinal His Eminence Stephan Chow Sau-yan, who granted me the opportunity to reside in Hong Kong.
I thank all of you, and I ask you to accompany me with your prayers.
